DIEP Flap Testimonial
April 7, 2016
Dear Dr. Vasile,
When notified that I needed a mastectomy the plastic surgeon assigned to my case decided that an implant and not a DIEP Flap would be my best option. We differed in opinion, but I knew that time was of the essence and I agreed to accept her decision. During the healing process, I noticed that the implant was becoming increasingly uncomfortable. I expressed my concern to the surgeon, but she dismissed it. I was so taken aback, after putting my trust in her.
I tried to move on, but every day I felt more and more uncomfortable and it was a constant reminder of what I had gone through. I was determined to find a surgeon who would be willing to give me a second opinion; this process took me several months. When I expressed how I felt [during a second opinion consultation], it was explained to me that adjusting the implant may not necessarily work for me and I should consider a DIEP flap. At this point, he suggested seeing you since you are proficient in the DIEP flap technique.
Initially, I did not think that you would consider my case, primarily because according to the plastic surgeon who did my original surgery, my weight was a risk factor and would make me ineligible for this type of surgery. To my surprise, when I called your assistant, she told me that she would relay my concern to you and that you would be in touch with me within a few days. Sure enough, you called and informed me that you had reviewed my case and I should come in for a consultation. You were extremely confident that I did qualify for a DIEP Flap. You were true to your word and within several months, you performed the surgery.
I want to take this opportunity to thank you for all you have done for me. You have really impacted my life for the better. You are incredibly compassionate, approachable and an exceptional surgeon. I feel especially blessed to have had the opportunity to have met you.
Sincerely,
RM
